Flock of Dodos: The Evolution-Intelligent Design Circus is a 2006 documentary film directed by Randy Olson, and produced by Ty Carlisle. This 84-minute documentary talks about the debate and the ongoing argument between proponents of the concept of intelligent design and the scientific theory that support evolution.
Randy Olson is a marine biologist and film-maker, and his documentary was first screened for the public in Kansas – this is, in fact, where the public controversy regarding intelligent design began. The screening was also the starting point of talk about this particular documentary. The film has also been screened at universities like Harvard and SUNY Stony Brook – celebrating the birthday of Charles Darwin. Today, the dodo (Raphus Cucullatus) is extinct, because of its fear and its inability to fly, it became easy prey for humans. It could not keep up with the environment that was constantly evolving, therefore it became extinct. The documentary talks about the question – who are the real dodos in this evolving world – the scientists who cannot effectively promote evolution as a scientifically proven fact, or the advocates of intelligent design, or the American public who are taken in by the salesmanship of the evolution critics? The film-maker himself takes the sides of the scientists supporting evolution, but equal time is given to everyone, including the proponents of intelligent design. The Discovery Institute has not taken kindly to the documentary, stating that it is a hoax, with many inaccuracies and misrepresentations. |
