Most of the students in the school are members of warring gangs in a community that is mostly African American and everybody else in the city considers them to be nothing but brainless gangbangers who are also criminals and dangerous, but as it turns out all they were actually looking for was for somebody to give them a chance. It is the school’s principal and the alumni association that work their hardest to help their school keep standing in the middle of the most turbulent times and they are the ones who open their doors to those very students who were hardly ever given a break before. This documentary showcases how only one man himself can change the lives of so many people and inspire so many others towards the better. The film however might not end in the way that you would expect most films to end but it is indeed challenging and does exactly what any good documentary film should do; it raises questions in our mind and face the truths about society. A gripping though heartbreaking film, it is a must watch. |
This is one good piece of documentary work. The film is about the same old, giving the under privileged kids a chance in a dangerous criminal neighborhood, but the only difference in this documentary is the fact that this is strikingly real with characters who actually existed. The documentary is filmed based on a high school in Newark and the school itself was Weequahic High.
