till the end of the film; unless you are too distracted by the brilliant performance by Richard Dreyfuss who plays the role of Holland. The story goes like this; Mr. Holland is a professional pianist who is stuck teaching music to a group of uninterested students, there is struggles to be overcome in a life being a newly married music teacher with sky-high dreams and expectations, the newly married couple also have a son very soon and the real tragedy is when their son is discovered to be deaf. The film essentially is about art and the difference that art can make in an individual’s life. The film is however not completely made up of heartwarming moments and a story that would not be completely true. There is also a hint of an extra marital affair, of a relationship between professor and student and a few similar moments. Either way, it is one film that you must watch at least once. |
‘Mr. Holland’s Opus’ is one film that you need to watch entirely to appreciate even the first few scenes; it spans over a period of thirty years through the career and life of Mr. Holland, a professional pianist and the rifts that exist in the lives of all those people who are involved in the film; this is mainly because the plot has to be looked at in its entirety and the significance and universality of the film can be realized only if the film is carefully followed
